2018 Conference: Friday Keynote Speakers

We are happy to announce our Keynote speakers for Friday, February 23: Dr. Donald Bear, Carine McCandless, and Loren Long.

Friday Morning Keynote: Donald R. Bear, Ph.D.

Dr. Donald Bear

Dr. Bear is a professor in literacy education at Iowa State University where he teaches doctoral, Master’s, and preservice teachers, and directs the Duffelmeyer Reading Clinic. He is also professor emeritus from the University of Nevada, Reno. Donald is involved in innovative professional development grants, and his work in assessment and word study is used widely. He is an author and co-author of numerous articles, book chapters, and 12 books, including Words Their Way, Words Their Way with English Learners, Vocabulary Their Way and Words Their Way with Struggling Readers, 4 – 12. He has received several awards for teaching and service. Donald is involved in numerous studies that examine literacy learning including studies of orthographic development in different and second languages. Dr. Bear’s talk is sponsored by Pearson Education, Inc.


Friday Luncheon Keynote: Carine McCandless

Carine McCandless is an entrepreneur, activist and mother. Carine’s memoir, The Wild Truth, published by Harper Collins / Harper One was released in November 2014, and was quick to become a New York Times Best Seller followed by international publications. The Wild Truth has been selected for many Best Books of 2014 lists including those chosen by readers and editors at Newsweek, Vanity Fair, Amazon and IndieNext. She lives in Virginia Beach, Virginia with her two daughters.



Friday Afternoon Keynote: Loren Long

Loren Long

Loren Long is the author and illustrator of the New York Times bestselling picture books Otis, Otis and the Tornado, Otis and the Puppy, An Otis Christmas and Otis and the Scarecrow. He is the #1 New York Times bestselling illustrator of President Barack Obama’s picture book Of Thee I Sing, the re-illustrated edition of The Little Engine That Could by Watty Piper, and Mr. Peabody’s Apples by Madonna.

Loren’s most recent work, Little Tree, is a picture book for all ages which will publish in September, 2015.
